    Year of St. Joseph
    8 December 2020 - 8 December 2021
      • Read "Patris Corde" by Pope Francis

    • “Go to Joseph; what he says to you, do.”
      (Genesis 41:55)

Devotion to St. Joseph appears to have originated in the East and gradually spread to the West.
Sts. Bernard, Thomas Aquinas, Gertrude, and Bridget of Sweden all promoted devotion to him.

Widespread devotion to St. Joseph began with his declaration as Patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1870.
Besides, St. Joseph is also evoked as the patron of a Happy Death and of Workers and Families.

The Solemnity of St. Joseph is celebrated on 19 March.
To promote the dignity of human labour as shown by this great saint,
Pope Pius XII instituted the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, which is celebrated on 1 May.

    • On the occasion of the Solemnity of St. Joseph on 19 March, Bishop Paul Hinder inaugurated the Year of St. Joseph at St. Joseph's Cathedral Abu Dhabi during the Holy Mass.

Here is the homily delivered by the Bishop.

  • Divine Favours

    • His power to help in all cases
"Some Saints are privileged to extend to us their patronage with particular efficacy in certain needs, but not in others; but our holy patron St. Joseph has the power to assist us in all cases, in every necessity, in every undertaking."

      St. Thomas Aquinas

    • His faithfulness and prudence
"There is no doubt then that this Joseph, to whom the mother of the Savior was espoused, was a man good and pre-eminently faithful. A prudent and faithful servant he was, I say, whom the Lord placed beside Mary to be her protector, the nourisher of his human body, and the single most trusty assistant on earth in his great design."

      St. Bernard of Clairvaux

    • His exalted dignity in Heaven
“On the Feast of the Annunciation, I saw Heaven opened and St. Joseph sitting upon a magnificent throne. I felt myself wonderfully affected when, each time his name was mentioned, all the Saints made a profound inclination toward him, showing by the serenity and sweetness of their looks that they rejoiced with him on account of his exalted dignity.”

      St. Gertrude the Great

    • His power to help us advance in virtue
“Knowing by experience St. Joseph’s astonishing influence with God, I would wish to persuade everyone to honor him with particular devotion. I have always seen those who honored him in a special manner make progress in virtue, for this heavenly protector favors in a striking manner the spiritual advancement of souls who commend themselves to him.”

      St. Teresa of Avila

  • Quotes from the Saints

    • “Nothing will be refused him [St. Joseph], neither by Our Lady nor by his glorious son.”

      - St. Francis De Sales -

    •

“Let us love Jesus above all, let us love Mary as our mother; but then, how could we keep from loving Joseph, who was so intimately united to both Jesus and Mary? And how can we honor him better than by imitating his virtues? Now, what else did he do in all his life but contemplate, study, and adore Jesus, even in the midst of his daily labors? Behold, therefore, our model.”

      - St. Madeleine Sophie Barat -

    • “We must be convinced that, in consideration of his great merits, God will not refuse St. Joseph
      any grace he asks
      for those who honor him.”

      - St. Alphonsus Liguori -

    • “The growth of Jesus ‘in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man’ (Lk. 2:52) took place within the Holy Family under the eyes of St. Joseph, who had the important task of ‘raising’ Jesus, that is, feeding, clothing, and educating him in the Law and in a trade, in keeping with the duties of a father.”

      - St. John Paul ll -

    • “Whoever fails to find a Master to teach him how to pray, should choose this glorious Saint, and he will not go astray.”

      - St. Teresa of Avila -

    • “His was the title of father of the Son of God, because he was the Spouse of Mary, ever Virgin. He was our Lord’s father, because Jesus ever yielded to him the obedience of a son. He was our Lord’s father, because to him were entrusted, and by him were faithfully fulfilled, the duties of a father, in protecting Him, giving Him a home, sustaining and rearing Him, and providing Him with a trade.”

      - St. John Henry Newman -
