On Sunday, May 11, Bishop Paolo addressed the catechists of St. Joseph Parish in Abu Dhabi, gathered for the annual "Catechists’ Day".
This event marked a moment of fellowship and celebration as the catechetical year draws to a close (all groups will finish within a month).
The day included a special Mass for the catechists and a gathering in Bishop Gremoli Hall, with the presence of Bishop Paolo Martinelli, Apostolic Vicar of Southern Arabia, and the parish priest, Fr. Chito.
Both the youth and the catechists performed short skits and dances.
Bishop Paolo addressed the participants (full text), urging them to be “witnesses of faith” and not only “teachers”:
“When can we say that we have truly transmitted the Christian faith? Not simply by teaching our children to know and repeat a list of precepts and commandments. They need to see in you not just teachers, but above all witnesses. We are catechists not when we put ourselves at the center, but when we become a humble reference to Christ: He is the center of life.”
Bishop Paolo encouraged the catechists to help the new generations discover Jesus as the answer to their deepest questions and as the true meaning of life.
“In catechism we must show the profound connection between faith and life. Our faith is never limited to celebrations, it touches every aspect of life. The mystery we celebrate in the Church must bring about change—in our families, in school, at work, and in society—, day by day, so that our whole life becomes Eucharist. Please, teach children to live their faith in everyday life.”
Finally, the bishop thanked all those involved in the catechetical ministry: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your ministry and your generous commitment. I hope this will be a precious opportunity to deepen your relationship with Jesus and to grow in faith, hope and love for Him and for all.”
