The Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic association of the Catholic Church, present in about 170 countries.
The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members, developed by prayer and active cooperation under ecclesiastical guidance.
The administration of the Legion is carried out through its various councils at local, regional and national level. The central council, called the Concilium Legionis Mariae, meets in Dublin, Ireland.
The Legion of Mary has been present in the Southern Vicariate since 1985, starting in Abu Dhabi. Legionaries have been visiting the sick, the families, and praying the rosary, helping to clean the churches, helping people to live sacramental life, and doing many other services in the parishes.
On 23rd June 2024, the Comitium of Southern Arabia was raised as the Regia of the Arabian Gulf to govern the wider Legion of Mary: in the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, where there is already a presence of the Legion of Mary and in any other branches that may, in the future, be set up in the region. The said Regia is still affiliated to the Concilium.
On this occasion, a thanksgiving mass was celebrated in St Joseph’s Cathedral, Abu Dhabi, presided over by H.E. Bp Paolo Martinelli OFM Cap., Apostolic Vicar of Southern Arabia, in the presence of H.E. Bp Aldo Berardi O.SS.T., Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia, and many priests, spiritual directors of the different curias and legionaries coming from all the different countries of the Arabian Gulf.
The two Apostolic Vicars thanked the Legion of Mary for their work in the region, encourages them to continue serving and entrusted them to the protection and guidance of the Virgin Mary.
